I ended the last blog with the word “Sacred” knowing that this was something that I would choose to circle back to. So what is “Sacredness”? It can be looked at as a quality of being holy, revered, or considered worthy of great respect or reverence. It can be associated with religious or spiritual beliefs and practices, but can also be attributed to other aspects of life that are considered to be significant or important, such as nature, relationships, or cultural traditions.
The concept of sacredness is often associated with a sense of awe, reverence, and respect that is beyond mere intellectual understanding. It can involve a deep emotional connection or a feeling of being in the presence of something greater than oneself.
Different cultures and religions have their own understanding of what is considered sacred, and the specific objects, places, or practices that are considered sacred can vary widely. A number of years ago I started to look at all the opportunities in my life that I could turn the ordinary into something sacred… something that I could stand in awe of. Through this practice, that in truth in the beginning was … exhausting… I have come to find my life more whole, I have a greater love, understanding and patience. That being said, I still have times when I struggle, however, I feel because of the ongoing choice to live in a sacred way, I am able to pull myself back to a kinder and more sacred way of living sooner.
So as I write this I would also like to give some ideas to you, dear reader, so that you may also practice living in more of a sacred way. Some thoughts: begin by looking at everyday moments as sacred – this involves cultivating a mindset of mindfulness and appreciation for the present moment. Here are some others ways that might assist in this beginning transformation into a gentler way of being:
- Practice gratitude: Take time each day to reflect on the things you are thankful for. This can help you appreciate the small blessings that are often overlooked.
- Be present: Pay attention to what’s happening around you in the moment. Take in the sights, sounds, smells, and sensations of your environment. This can help you feel more connected to the present moment and the world around you.
- Cultivate mindfulness: Practice mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga to help you stay grounded in the present moment.
- Look for beauty in the ordinary: Look for the beauty and wonder in everyday things. Take a moment to appreciate the simple pleasures of life, such as a beautiful sunset or the sound of birds chirping.
- Connect with others: Take time to connect with the people around you. Build relationships with those who are important to you, and take time to appreciate the love and support they offer.
- Practice self-care: Take care of your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Nourish your body with healthy food, get plenty of rest, and take time to do things that bring you joy and relaxation.
By approaching each day with an attitude of mindfulness and appreciation, you can begin to see even the most mundane moments as sacred and meaningful.
